Inyo Mountains - New York Butte Area

In March-April 1978 I did three short day hikes in the Inyo Mountains in the New York Butte area. My notes are not sufficient for me to create a map of the routes.

The first trip was on March 19, 1978. About noon I drove out east of Lone Pine to road end southeast of Kern Knob, hiked up side road and back to old mine, then up road to old talc mine, then on up trail following old tram to "Snow White" mine tunnels just west of point 6342.

The second trip was on March 26, 1978. About noon I drove out east of Lone Pine to road end near old Alico siding. Hiked up locked off road to open pit mining operations then on up ridge beyond point 4613 and along ridge top then down into a canyon to old mine road. Hiked up side road to old mine works and explored deep tunnel which still had mine track and ore cart in it. Then followed road back to car.

The third trip was April 2, 1978. About noon I drove out to side road between Swansea and Keeler, up road about 3 miles. Hiked up gully past mine claim, then up to saddle and top of ridge, on to high point overlooking the area. Backtracked and dropped down north from the saddle into canyon and explored old wood chute from a pit where a red rock had been mined. Across the canyon another more extensive mine of the same red rock. Climbed alongside chute which had been suspended from a cable to the mine pit, then on to top of ridge nearby where I found an old double pulley. Dropped back down into canyon from ridge and followed it and old road back to car.
