San Bernardina National Forest - California Riding and Hiking Trail
Coon Creek

On July 27, 1963 I took a 14 mile round trip hike on the California Riding and Hiking Trail to Coon Creek Camp off of State 38 as a scouting trip for an Explorer Post 360 Camelback Hike which we apparently never did.

I didn't keep very good notes on the route. I think I started at Onyx Summit on State 38 and followed what was then the California Riding and Hiking Trail. Much of the route was on fire roads but nice country in the 7-8000' elevation range.

The Coon Creek Group Campground is located in the pine-covered mountains of Southern California an 8,000' elevation. The unique campground is home to three historic cabins and a stunning view into the Coachella Valley on clear days. The campground is adjacent to a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail, less than 20 miles away from Big Bear Lake.

Since when I made this hike, the route has been converted to the National Pacific Crest Trail with new trail being constructed to replace fire road. I believe this video shows the current route.
