San Bernardino Mountains - Camelback Hike
Big Bear to Lake Arrowhead

On November 16-17, 1963 Explorer Post 390 backpacked 28 miles on the California Riding and Hiking Trail from Big Bear City to Lake Arrowhead in the San Barnardino Mountains. The group included John Butler, Dave Butler, Norman Hewitt, Richard Hewitt, Walter Pease, Ed Pease, Steve Henderson, Kenny Dodd, Mike Harris, Jack Weaver, Dick Terry, Noel Parr, Greg O'Leary, Don Deck, Bill Paine, Bill Ravenscroft and John Will.

Saturday we hiked 14 miles from Big Bear City to Big Pine Flat campground. After car shuttle left trailhead at 12:30 p.m. and made camp at 5:15 p.m. as it started to get dark. Water was turned off which made it difficult for supper.

Sunday morning the temperature was 20°. We hiked 14 miles to North Shore Campground at Lake Arrowhead. Started at 9 a.m. and made campground at 3:15 p.m. Much of this day was on trails with some water, while the rest of the hike was on fire roads.

John Butler left his eyeglasses at Big Pine Flat campground so we drove in to get them on the way home. Steve Henderson and Dave Butler both got car sick on the windy road and upchucked out opposite windows. Had to wash off the car at a gas station.

NOTE: In September 2023, when creating this page, I was unable to find the California Riding and Hiking Trail route as it ixisted in 1963. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, which didn't exist in 1963, has replaced it in this area.
