Sierra Nevada - Golden Trout Wilderness - Muah Mountain

On June 9-10, 1973 I backpacked a seventeen mile round trip with Paul Robotta and Rick Erb to climb 11,016' Muah Mountain. We drove from San Diego to the end of Cottonwood/Horseshoe Meadows road and slept beside the car Friday night.

Saturday we hit the trail about 7:30 a.m. and went over Mulkey Pass, then cross country toward Muah Mountain to upper Mulkey Meadow. Left our packs and proceeded about 2 miles cross-country to Muah Mountain. Easy terrain with a little scrambling near the peak. Ate lunch on the peak and returned to our packs.

I made camp while Paul and Rick went downstream a short distance and fished. Caught a few small trout that they tossed back. Weather warm but pleasant. Nice sunset over Trail Peak.

Sunday we were up early and headed down Mulkey Meadow past several active Beaver Dams and several trail junctions to the Trail Pass junction. Then up a pleasant trail to Trail Pass around 11:00 a.m. Ate lunch and decided not to climb Trail Peak.

Instead, I returned to the car while Paul and Rick made a cross-country trip to Cottonwood Creek for possible fishing. They didn't fish - too fast a water - but went for a swim and arrived at the car about 3 p.m. We headed home after a Frosty stop in Lone Pine. Left Lone Pine 4:30 p.m. and arrived Rick's house about 9:30 p.m. No traffic to speak of. Nice Spring trip.
