Sierra Nevada - John Muir Wilderness - Morgan Pass

On February 15-17, 1975 myself, Gil Beilke, Brian Jordan, Brian Twohey, Dan Curley, Nancy Henderson, John Smallwood, Mic Mead and two friends of Gil's did a 20 mile round trip snowshoe trip in the Morgan Pass area.

The group came up from San Diego Friday night and spent the night at my Bishop apartment. On Saturday we got up and on the road about 8:30 and hit the trail about 9;30. The Rock Creek road was plowed about 6 miles off the highway to the East Fork Campground. Rock Creek Nordic runs a snowcat to the Rock Creek Lodge and runs a Ski Touring operation. We snowshoed up the road to its end and about a half mile beyond where we made camp at frozen Mack Lake.

Sunday various people did various things. Five of us snowshoed and skied to Morgan Pass in blustery weather. On the way back it snowed and blew.

Monday morning at 6 a.m. the temperature was -17°F. The sun finally warmed us up and we returned to the cars about noon. After a stop at my apartment, the gang headed for San Diego. Saturday and Monday were beautiful days and the trip was great.
