On May 1-2, 1976 I backpacked with Explorer Post 82 members Marty Nikolaus, Randy Stevenson, Nancy Roberts and guests Stan Haye and Jim Meadowcroft on a 7 mile round trip. We left my house at about 6:20 a.m., hit the trail at Whitney Portal about 7:30 a.m. Jim and Nancy slow due to only 4 hours sleep after track meet so we didn't make very good time.
Plan was to go to Iceberg Lake and climb Mountaineer's route on Whitney. Due to Jim and Nancy slowness we stopped at Upper Boy Scout Lake to camp (11,300). Very windy night.
Lazy Sunday morning - got up at 7:30. Marty and Randy climbed Mt. Carillon. Stan started down the trail and waited at Lower Boy Scout Lake. Don, Jim & Nancy hiked up to face of Whitney (12,300). Left Upper Boy Scout Lake at about 3 p.m. After some false short cuts, made the car from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Good trip even though we didn't make the planned goal.
