On August 1, 1976 I took a 4 mile round trip day hike in Long John Canyon. I left the house about noon, drove up the Long John Canyon road to the spring, about 5,600 feet elevation. (No point in taking the road as it leaves the canyon as you can only go a short distance further.)
Hiked up the trail about 2 miles and 2000 feet (about half way to the top) and at a saddle turned and came down the ridge top dropping into the various mines in-route. Found one with a good tunnel and railroad track. None are being worked or have any equipment.
Made it back to the car about 5 p.m. and got water from the spring before returning home. Nice cool sunny afternoon hike.
