Sierra Nevada - South Sierra Wilderness - Deer Mountain

On November 11-13, 1977 David Troeter and I backpacked to and climbed 9401' Deer Mountain on an 18 mile round trip in the South Sierra Wilderness.

We left Lone Pine about 8 a.m. and drove to the Kennedy Meadows Campground, arriving about 10. We hiked leisurely to Clover Meadow, making camp about 3 p.m.

Saturday we left camp about 9 and hiked up the trail to the "cabin site" near Deer Mountain on the Dutch John Flat trail, then cross country to Deer Mtn. The fourth "top" was finally it. We found a register dating back to 1972. We were only people to climb it in 1977. We made the top about 3 p.m. after a leisurely hike. We headed down about 3:30 and were back in camp at 5:15 as it got dark.

Sunday we headed out about 9:30 and arrived at the car leisurely around 1 p.m. and home about 3 p.m. We had great weather and a nice trip. It was David's first backpack and first overnight campout.
