On May 21, 1983 Gil Beilke and I headed up Onion Valley for a snowshoe trip. Gill drove up from San Diego to spend the weekend. I couldn't go for the weekend but drove up with him and took my skis. It was great. I skied up to Gilbert Lake and then on up the ridge toward University Peak.
On top of the ridge I could see Gil making camp on a high ledge. A Sierra Club group was also in the area and camped nearby. I skied down to the car on great snow in beautiful weather. Gil attempted University Peak the next day but got off route and didn't make it. He had a good time anyway.
