Sierra Nevada - John Muir Wilderness - Onion Valley Road Ski Tour

On February 11, 1984 I decided that I HAD to get out and try my Ramer Skis so checked out the Onion Valley road during the week and it looked skiable. Got an early start and was able to ski for about a mile or so before reaching a section of road that was barren of snow.

Took off the skis and hiked up a mile or so to the snow and continued on skis to the pack station building at Onion Valley. Had lunch and rested before going up the hill a short ways above the Ranger Station. I had climbed all the way on skins since my wax didn't want to stick.

Now I switched to wax and got it too sticky so had a few problems before getting going. In the meantime the clouds were drifting in over the crest and hiding the sun. I had a nice ski down, including the walk between snow areas, and found I had better turning control with the Ramer's than with my old wood ski's. It was a bit icy and snow was not very deep so I didn't get to really do much - but had fun anyway.
