Sierra Nevada - Kennedy Meadows
Monanche Mountain - Jackass Peak

I backpacked in the Kennedy Meadows Area three times and did a day hike once. The area is in the Golden Trout and South Sierra Wilderness (which didn't exist at the time) and incluides some privately owned land that is used for cattle grazing. There is a 4-Wheel Drive road available to the public in this area.

The first trip was on May 29-June 1, 1969. I backpacked with 16 members of Explorer Post 360 on a 24 mile round trip in the Kennedy Meadows area.

The water was too high on the Kern River to leave from Kennedy Meadows campground so went to Fish Creek. From Fish Creek we took the southern trail - got off trail and ended up on the Jackass trail - then on to Broder Meadow. Some snow in trees and lots of water - beautiful area - good camp at Broder Meadow.

On Saturday we climbed 9,418' Monache Mountain where we had fairly good views of Olancha Peak and Monache Meadows. Sunday on way out climbed 9,280' Jackass Peak - came out Jackass trail. Good spring trip.
